2014 Fellowship

Project Location: New York City
Project Duration: 10 Weeks
Reports to: Executive Vice President of Research, Evaluation and Strategic Planning
Application Deadline: March 28, 2014; 5:00pm EST
Award Amount: $8,000

Fellowship Program Overview:  Changing Our World provides summer fellowships to highly motivated graduate students (Masters and Ph.D. candidates) currently enrolled in accredited programs of business, international studies, public policy, social sciences and related disciplines.  The competitive program aims to contribute to the development of future leaders in the public, philanthropic, and nonprofit sectors, and, as an investment, advance the capacity of nonprofits and social enterprise organizations globally.

Changing Our World fellows gain research and analytical experience and have the opportunity to further establish a career within or related to the nonprofit sector.  Fellows have the opportunity to network with and work alongside leaders in relevant nonprofit and philanthropy fields, and are also exposed to a variety of projects related to nonprofit finance, corporate social engagement, strategic planning, and technology.

2014 Fellowship Overview and Project Scope:  The consistent decline in the percentage of giving to religion over the past decade has been striking. Changes in religious beliefs, generational gaps in institutional involvement, and further diversification of religious institutions, among other factors, have all contributed to a more fragmented and less reliable philanthropic base for religious organizations. Or at least so it seems.

The purpose of the 2014 fellow project is to examine how the changes within the U.S. have affected religious giving, religious institutions financially, and their revenue strategies. This analysis will require quantitative research as well as an in-depth look into the qualitative implications for philanthropy among religious institutions. Key topics of interest include the demographic and religious affiliation trends of Americans, the distribution and consolidation trends among religious nonprofits, and the little recognized community impact of religious institutions.

Responsibilities:  The selected Summer Fellow shall construct and carry out a 10-week work plan with the guidance and support of Changing Our World's Research and Analytics team. The Summer Fellow shall compile his or her findings into a briefing and conduct a presentation to senior leadership.

Requirements:  The candidate must be a currently enrolled in graduate studies at an accredited institution of higher education. Experience in research and analysis in a business setting is preferred, but that setting need not be in the nonprofit sector.

To apply, please submit the following four items to fellowship@changingourworld.com:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter indicating how the candidate's background and career plans align with the subject matter of the Fellowship
  • A proposed work plan outlining research methods and potential data sources (one-page)
  • Letter of recommendation from a current academic professor or advisor*

*Please note that the letter of recommendation should be submitted separately by the recommender.

Fellows are selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Creativity of methodology used to address the selected fellowship topic
  • Excellent research and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated civic engagement
  • Commitment to philanthropic and/or nonprofit scholarship
